History
ITA Airways has the OACI code: ITY and the IATA code: AZ.
Alitalia airline was an Italian flag carrier created in 1946. Owned by the Italian government until 2009, it became a private company after reorganizing and merging with the bankrupt Italian airline AirOne.
After numerous failed attempts to be a solvent and profitable airline, in 2020, and seeing that the company would not survive the COVID-19 crisis, the Italian Government signed an agreement for the reorganization of the company as Italia Trasporto Aereo S.p.A. (stock company) .
Italia Trasporto Aereo S.p.A., or ITA Airways, thus becomes the Italian flag carrier wholly owned by the Government of Italy through the Ministry of Economy and Finance. In 2022, ITA Airways announced that MSC Group and Lufthansa express interest in becoming majority owners of the Italian airline, with the Italian government retaining a minority stake.
